Cement is one of the&nbsp;<strong>most important raw materials<\/strong>&nbsp;used in buildings as the strength of any construction work depends on the quality of cement. The gray cement should be factory-manufactured by a reputed manufacturer. It must not be from a local plant manufacturer. It is properly packed from the factory, not hand packed locally. While taking a supply of gray cement,&nbsp;the <strong>manufacturing date, grade, and type<\/strong>&nbsp;should be checked. The cement should not be more than six weeks old from the date of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makemyhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manufacturing<\/a><\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Types of gray cement<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">According to chemical properties gray cement can be classified as follows.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Ordinary Portland cement (for general use)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Rapid-hardening Portland cement (where high early strength is required)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Low-heat Portland cement (in mass concrete for dam etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/makemyhouse.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Purchasing-Cement-Guidelines-1.png\" alt=\"Purchasing Cement Guidelines-1\" class=\"wp-image-432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.makemyhouse.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Purchasing-Cement-Guidelines-1.png 450w, https:\/\/www.makemyhouse.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Purchasing-Cement-Guidelines-1-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Manufacturing of gray cement<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">All types of cement like&nbsp;<strong>Ordinary Portland Cement, Rapid-hardening Portland cement, or Low heat Portland cement<\/strong>&nbsp;are manufactured by intimately mixing Calcareous, Argillaceous and Silica, and Alumina or Iron Oxide bearing materials, which are burnt at clinkering temperature and are ground to produce gray cement, complying with specifications. No <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makemyhouse.com\/blogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">material <\/a><\/strong>except Gypsum Water or both should be added after burning.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Specifications of gray cement<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Fineness<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">There are following two methods to check the fineness of Portland cement.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Method 1:<\/strong>&nbsp; After sieving, the cement on IS test Sieve No.9 (B.S. Sieve No 170) should not exceed 10% in the case of Ordinary Portland Cement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Method 2:<\/strong>&nbsp; Specific surface by Air Permeability Method should not be less than 2150 sq. cm\/&nbsp; kg in the case of Ordinary Portland Cement<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Soundness<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Alternatively, autoclave expansion should not be more than 0.5% when tested according to IS 269 of 1989.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Setting time<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Setting time of any type or any grade of cement when tested by the Vicat apparatus method described in IS: 4031 should confirm the following requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Initial setting time<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Not less than 30 minutes<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Final setting time:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Not more than 600 minutes i.e. 10 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Compressive Strength<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">After 28 days compressive strength of cement concrete mix for various types of cement concrete mix is following.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Compressive strength of cement concrete mix<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">&nbsp;<strong>S. You can ensure the quality of \u2018Cement\u2019 by following guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">The cement bag bears the date of manufacturing&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">One cement bag has 50 Kg. weights<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Cement bags are not hand-stitched<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">The consignment must have an identification mark on the package<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Cement is packed in bags of synthetic jute or polypropylene bags<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Factory-manufactured instead of plant manufactured<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Bears manufacturer&#8217;s name or his trademark, grade, and type of cement<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Not older than six weeks from the date of manufacturing<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Not partially set due to moisture or have small lumps in bags<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Not pressed or have lumps due to high pressure of stack, having more than 10 to 12 bags<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">The bags are not torn by side and stitched in later<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Precautions while transporting cement<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Carry bags in clean vehicle which is not dustier or on earth etc. as it reduces the strength of cement.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Take cement bags under covered Polythene or \u2018Tarpaulin\u2019 during monsoon season.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Labor should not tear bags while loading and unloading cement bags.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Precautions while stacking\/storing gray cement<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Store cement in a moist-proof area otherwise the quality of the cement will be affected<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Stack cement bags in dry, leak-proof, and moisture-proof shed\/fumes<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Place cement bags on dry brick floors, wooden crates, or planks<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Don\u2019t place cement bags on the earth in any case<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Don\u2019t make a stack of bags higher than 10 bags to avoid lumps under pressure&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Don\u2019t stack up cement bags with outer walls to protect them from dampness<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Pile up cement bags from different manufacturers separately<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Make use of cement on a first come first serve basis&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Cover cement bags with polythene during the monsoon season<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">Keep cement bags close to each other to reduce air circulation&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\"><strong>Caution for storage\/stacking<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">When construction work is assigned to a contractor, make sure he takes proper care of the cement. Many times contractors do not take care of proper storage of cement at the site as it costs them labor and money.&nbsp; This results in a reduction in the strength of cement as shown in the table below.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,cursive;\">In some cases, it is observed that after laying the RCC slab on some parts of the building, the contractor dismantles his temporary store at the site and places cement bags on the ground floor of the building which is under construction.
